#01 SIMPLE SETUP A basic kit containing a set of colored pencils, paper, sharpener, and eraser is enough to begin with and create an artwork. Everything else is optional and can be added later as skills progress. #02 VERSATILITY Colored pencil can be used on a various substrate such as paper, canvas, mylar, wood, marble etc. I like to work on canvas because the texture gives a distinct character to a colored pencil artwork. #03 VARIETY Their are many types of colored pencils each with it's own unique characteristic. Commonly found are the wax based, oil based, water soluble, color sticks, and the woodless colored pencils which happens to be my favorite. #04 EXTREME DETAILS The sharp point of colored pencil is ideal for doing intricate details and highly suitable for photorealistic artworks. #05 NO MESSY CLEAN UPS No brushes or palette to wash. I can leave everything on my drawing table anytime and come back at it again whenever want to. All it needs is a little sharpening from time to time and the shavings go straight into the waste bin. I'd like to spend more time drawing than cleaning! :-D #06 FINE ART MEDIUM Artist grade colored pencils should not be mistaken for those used by kids for their coloring books. In the hands of a skillful artist, specially formulated colored pencils can be used to create an artwork that is worthy to be displayed on a gallery or museum. #07 EASY TO USE I'm clumsy when it to comes to using brushes and wet media but I feel right at home with colored pencils, after all, it's just like holding and using a graphite pencil—how hard can that be? #08 OPEN MEDIUM There is more than one way to use colored pencils and it gives the freedom to explore different materials and techniques. My personal preference is colored pencil on canvas. "I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it." — Pablo Picasso #09 PERFECT MATCH I'm not good with handling brushes for oil or watercolor and pastels are just too messy for me, and besides, I've never made any remarkable progress with any of those medium. With colored pencils, everything seems to come naturally right from the beginning and my skills have grown by leaps and bounds in just a short time. #10 FAITHFUL COMPANIONS Colored Pencils are silent witnesses to all of my travails as I create each and every artwork. Never have they looked down on me in all my shortcomings but have always been instrumental in all of my success. They bear record of all my joy and laughter, heartaches and tears, constant watchers as I walk alone in a world none could ever understand. They are my beloved Colored Pencils.

I sometimes use a brush for blending colored pencils but the good things is I can clean it up later without having to worry that the pigment will harden and ruin the brush. :)

So well said, and well presented, also love the paper looking background you chose ( from a web designer perspective) I can't live without my pencils and they go where I go!

Hi Theresa, I first seal the canvas with a Grumbacher Final Varnish spray and then use Golden Polymer Varnish (brush on). You need to be careful in applying the spray fixative or the pigments will dissolve.

Very entertaining! I feel the same way about my colored pencils! Never tried them on canvas though. Do you use anything to prepare the canvas before you start?

It is best to use a fine textured canvas primed with acrylic gesso.
